BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team worked out in shells for roughly two hours Wednesday on the campus practice fields as the Blazers continued their preparations for Saturday's 2012 season opener vs. Troy at Legion Field.
The Blazers and Trojans will kick off at 11 a.m. CT. The game will be televised on Fox College Sports with Mike Gleason (pxp), Ben Leber (analyst) and Lesley McCaslin (sidelines).
The contest will also air on radio locally on the Blazer IMG Sports Network on WUHT-FM 107.7. David Crane will call the action and John Whitcomb will provide analysis for the Blazers.
UAB defensive coordinator Reggie Johnson said preparations will continue until the teams tee it up on Saturday. "You always hear them say, `the hay's in the barn'. For me, it's never in the barn. We're going to continue to prepare and keep working."
Johnson also commented on how far the players have progressed since they started camp in late July.
"There's an unbelievable difference of where the guys were when they got here," said Johnson. "That's both physically in that their bodies have changed, and mentally, working through the summer with Coach Chandler, and then when we got them, we were able to push themselves and we could work them harder."
Blazers' safeties coach Brandon Sharp said the defensive backs will have to be ready to defend the Trojans' offense and junior quarterback Corey Robinson.
"They pass the ball a lot," he said. "As a secondary, we have to be on our game. We have to know their formations and what we need to check to get us in the right position.
The Blazers will work out again Thursday afternoon as game day gets closer.
