BIRMINGHAM, Ala. β UAB football completedΒ its first scrimmage on Friday morning at Legacy Pavilion,Β running 112 plays in a fast, physical session. The scrimmage provided an early look at a team still taking shape under first-year head coachΒ Alex Mortensen-Β and showcased flashes on both sides of the ball. "I feel like it went fairly well," Mortensen said. "It was fast, it was physical, which was a good sign to start with."
Offensively, quarterbackΒ Ryder BurtonΒ led the way with four touchdown passes, spreading the ball across multiple targets.Β KJ Daniels,Β Brayden JohnsonΒ andΒ Antonio FergusonΒ each hauled in touchdown receptions, whileΒ Rod Robinson IIΒ added a touchdown on a swing pass. Additional scoring came fromΒ Gabriel ClineΒ andΒ Ja'Vin Simpkins, continuing a balanced offensive showing.
As the quarterbacks continue to develop, Mortensen emphasized patience and decision-making as a key point of emphasis during the scrimmage. "You feel like when you go in, you've got to make the most of every rep," he said. "When in reality, you take what they give you, and eventually they'll give you the big play."
Defensively, the Blazers responded throughout the scrimmage and finished with impact plays on the back end.Β Isaiah CrozierΒ andΒ Elijah PrattΒ each recorded interceptions, including a late takeaway by Pratt to close the session. While the production was notable, the focus remains on continued development as the roster continues to evolve. "We've got some things that we know for sureβ¦those things come with time", Mortensen said.
The Blazers will continue spring practice on Tuesday as they build toward the Spring Showcase on April 18.Β
