BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Senior point guard Aaron Johnson continues to reap in awards. After he was selected as a first-team all-conference performer earlier on Monday, the league office also announced Johnson as the C-USA Player of the Week. It marks his first career Player of the Week award for Johnson and is the fourth-such award by a Blazer this season.
Johnson was the difference maker in UAB's two wins this week, lifting the Blazers to their first outright C-USA regular season championship in school history. He dominated in victories over Southern Miss on Wednesday and East Carolina on Saturday, averaging 9.0 points and 11.5 assists a game. Furthermore, he collected 23 assists and only one turnover in the two contests.
In the win at Southern Miss on Wednesday night, the Chicago, Ill. native tied the single-game school record with 14 assists, and only one turnover, to go along with seven points in 39 minutes of action in the 67-66 triumph. On senior day against East Carolina last Saturday, Johnson proved to again be unstoppable, collecting 11 points and nine assists without a turnover in 38 minutes of action.
Johnson and the Blazers will return to action on Thursday when it takes on the winner between the East Carolina and UCF game, which will be played on Wednesday. The contest will tip off at Noon CT and will be televised on CBS College Sports.
