Hello UAB soccer fans! Man, last weekend was good for our team. We played Mississippi State on Friday night with a great win of 3-0. We did a lot of things well and it was great to finally get our first win. We also got to see a former UAB women's soccer player, and one of my best friends, Janet Self. She's always fun to be around and brings good vibes to our team.
We also played a game Sunday against Ole Miss and were able to beat them as well! We won 3-1, which puts our record at 2-2. I wasn't too sure if the field would be soaking wet or if we'd even get to play because of the rain, but it began to clear up around game time. There was a few periods during the game where it began to rain again, but were able to finish off the game.
I was very pleased with the way we played last weekend and glad we were able to get some goals and finish some teams off. In the game Sunday, we had all three of our starting forwards score a goal, which was awesome. Carolyn Polcari had the first goal followed by Tiffini Turpin and Laura McCalla. Laura's sister plays for Ole Miss so she was really happy we beat them and that she scored. It felt great to win two over the weekend and also to beat some SEC schools.
We've also had some birthdays on our team from last week! Sam Bradford, a freshman, just turned 18 last Saturday! And sophomore Alexis Braziel turned 20 last Tuesday! Whenever we have birthdays we play this game called "Butts Up." It's a fun game to play, unless it's your birthday! We had a handful of summer birthday and early August birthdays, so we played with all who had birthdays within that time, including myself. How you play is if it's your birthday you stand in the goal, bent over at the waist, butt facing out. Everyone else on the team lines up at the penalty area and gets to nail a ball and try to hit your butt. It always makes me super nervous being in the goal and waiting to see if anyone has good aim that day, but it's our team's little way of saying happy birthday.
This coming Friday we play Western Carolina then Samford on Sunday. Friday will be a home game so everyone needs to come out and support us! Sunday's game is across town at Samford and that's always a great game to watch as well against our cross-town rivals!
