BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Former UAB women's soccer defender Danielle Blair has received the Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship, as announced Tuesday by Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky. Blair is one of the 12 recipients selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors for the $4,000 scholarship.
This is the second year the award has been named for Dr. Castañeda, who served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in November 2008.
"Danielle absolutely exemplifies the true collegiate model of athletics as promoted by the NCAA in it's core values," UAB head coach Paul Harbin said. "With integrity and sportsmanship, she's pursued excellence in academics and athletics as well as her social pursuits. I'm extremely proud of Danielle and excited that she has been recognized by the conference for her efforts. Very well deserved."
Blair has been an outstanding student-athlete during her four-year tenure for the Green and Gold. A three-time ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American, Blair started in all 21 matches last season for UAB. The Toronto, Ontario native has twice been named to the C-USA All-Academic Team and earned the league's Academic Medal four straight years.
Blair becomes the fifth representative of the UAB women's soccer team to receive the scholarship. She joins Jill Porto (2008), Briana McCarty (2005), Lisa Nowoslawski (2003) and Katja Lerew (2001).
The UAB graduate also received the athletic department's Gene Bartow Scholarship earlier this year and plans to pursue her Master's in Business Administration.
