BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB softball team took two contests from Kennesaw State Monday afternoon at UAB Softball Field. The Blazers defeated the Owls, 4-2, in the first matchup, and blanked them, 7-0, to claim the doubleheader.
With the pair of wins, UAB improves to 22-9 overall and remains at 6-3 in Conference USA play, while Kennesaw State falls to a 17-15 record (3-3 A-Sun).
"This was the best practice we could have had," UAB head coach Marla Townsend said. "We had opportunities for the majority of our players to see playing time. We also felt like we had solid defense and our communication was extremely effective today."
In the second game, freshman pitcher Lauren Webster (10-3) held Kennesaw State to just one hit and no runs. The Mathews, Ala., product allowed no walks and fanned six batters in the win.
"Lauren had an outstanding game," Townsend said. "To hold Kennesaw State to one hit is quite an accomplishment, and when you have players like Martina Landrum robbing a home run at the fence, you can really trust your defense."
Blazer leadoff hitter Martina Landrum was hit by a pitch to start the game, stole second and rounded the diamond on base hits by Caley Walden and Cameron Skates. Owl pitcher Abbey Meixel (5-8) walked in Skates to give the Blazers a 2-0 advantage.
In the second, catcher Mandy Lowman smacked a a single up the middle and scored on a triple by first baseman Kayla Orr. Orr crossed on a groundout by shortstop Catherine Douglass.
A combination of base hits and Owl errors led the Blazers to tally three more runs in the fifth to stretch their lead to 7-0. Lowman went 3-for-4 with one run, as UAB posted 10 hits in the win.
The first game of the doubleheader was scoreless until UAB catcher Erica Sisson belted a two-run homer down the left field line to score pinch runner Tiffany Smith and tally two runs for the Blazers in the fourth.
The Blazers took advantage of Owl miscues in the fifth to tack on two more runs. Walden knocked a single and both Walden and Sallie Van Kirk scored on a throwing error by the pitcher to take the 4-0 lead.
Kennesaw State plated two runs in the seventh, but was unable to waiver the UAB defense and take the lead. Designated player Erica Joseph crossed on a fielder's choice and rightfielder Lyndsay McCurry scored on a single by Ashlee Burkett.
In the circle for UAB, junior pitcher Alisha Smith (7-5) retired eight batters and allowed just two earned runs to lead UAB past the Owls.
The Blazers play host to South Alabama Wednesday for a matchup at UAB Softball Field. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. CT.
