BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Evelien Strijker and Jenny Cape picked up singles victories Friday, but the UAB women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision on campus to visiting Middle Tennessee.
Strijker defeated Natalie Araya 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 2 position, while Cape earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Marietta Bigus at the No. 6 spot in the lineup. Giorgia Romeo won the opening set at No. 3 before falling in three, but the Blazers lost the remaining singles matches in straight sets.
Strijker was also part of a doubles victory, teaming with Romeo to claim an 8-3 win over Bigus and Araya at No. 1 doubles. Middle Tennessee, however, won the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches to take the opening point of the day.
UAB dropped to 8-7 on the season with the loss, while Middle Tennessee improved to 7-5.
With a change to this weekend's schedule, the Blazers will be back in action Saturday at 10 a.m. CT against Conference USA foe UTEP on campus. The match will be played at the 11th Avenue South tennis courts. It was originally scheduled for Sunday but has been moved up a day because of a forecast for rain.
