UAB Women's Tennis Team Defeats UTEP, 4-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis team closed its weekend Saturday morning with a 4-2 on-campus victory over Conference USA foe UTEP in the Blazers' final home match of the spring.
UAB won four of the six singles matches to improve to 9-7 on the season and drop the Miners to 8-9. Doubles matches were not contested with UTEP also playing Middle Tennessee in Birmingham on Saturday afternoon.
The Blazers won at the top two singles spots and the bottom two with Paula Alvarez (No. 1), Evelien Strijker (No. 2), Brittany DeFelice (No. 5) and Jenny Cape (No. 6) earning straight-set victories. Giorgia Romeo lost in three sets for the second time in two days at No. 3, while Menanteau Moolman at No. 4 accounted for the other Blazer loss.
"This is the first match in a while that I have really seen us dig deep mentally and win based on our mental toughness," UAB head coach Krissy Hall said. "I am really proud of the girls for stepping up today, and we'll look to carry this mental toughness into next weekend."
UAB will now close the regular season with five straight matches away from home. The Blazers return to action Friday at Memphis at 2 p.m. CT.
