CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- After losing the doubles point Saturday, the UAB women's tennis team rebounded to win four of the six singles matches on the way to a 4-3 win at Chattanooga.
UAB's Giorgia Romeo won her fourth straight singles match, downing Shaina Singh 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 3 position. The junior, who has not dropped a set over her past four matches, also combined with Evelien Strijker for the Blazers lone doubles win.
The Blazers also managed straight-set singles victories from Paula Alvarez (No. 2), Menanteau Moolman (No. 4) and Jenny Cape (No. 6).
"I'm proud of the way we came back despite losing doubles," UAB head coach Krissy Hall said. "We fought hard and played well in singles. Now we'll look forward to seeing a conference opponent on Monday when we play Tulane."
UAB's only losses in singles came in closely contested matches after the team match had already been decided. With the Blazers leading 4-1, Strijker suffered a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 loss to Jenna Nurik at No. 1, and Brittany DeFelice fell 7-6, 7-6 to Charlotte Bossy at No. 5.
The victory snapped a two-match losing streak for UAB as the Blazers improved to 8-5 this spring. Chattanooga dropped to 4-9 with the loss.
After three road matches in a row, the Blazers now return to Birmingham to host Tulane on Monday at Noon CT.
