Blazers Find Singles Success On Day Two At Rice

HOUSTON -- The UAB women's tennis team continued play Saturday at the Rice Invitational with four Blazers earning singles victories.
Giorgia Romeo, Paula Alvarez and Menanteau Moolman advanced over Conference USA opponents in the consolation brackets of their draws, while Rachel Cohen picked up a round-robin victory in her flight.
Two of those singles victories came in straight sets with Romeo taking down UTEP's Dasha Addrakhmamova 6-1, 6-0 in Flight 1 and Moolman defeating Jo Garvey of Houston 6-3, 6-4 in Flight 6.
The other two wins came in match tiebreakers with Alvarez topping Asa Bengston of Southern Miss 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 and Cohen defeating Gina Stephenson of Lee College 6-1, 3-6, 10-7.
UAB's Jenny Cape and Richole Berger each suffered losses in the main draws of their flights. Cape went down in three sets to Rice's Alex Rasch, suffering her first loss in her past five matches this fall.
Cape and Romeo closed out their doubles flight with a win as doubles play concluded Saturday. The tournament wraps up Sunday with the final round of singles in all flights.

Flight 5: Rasch (UAB) def. Cape (UAB); 6-2, 2-6, 6-1. Flight 6: Moolman (UAB) def. Garvey (Houston); 6-3, 6-4. Flight 7: Fried (Rice) def. Berger (UAB); 6-2, 7-6 (2). Flight 8: Cohen (UAB) def. Stephenson (Lee); 6-1, 3-6, 10-7.
