Blazers Sweep Through Belmont In Women's Tennis Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis team opened its dual match schedule Saturday morning in impressive fashion with a 6-0 sweep of Belmont indoors at the Samford Tennis Center.
The Blazers took the top five spots in straight sets, highlighted by Giorgia Romeo's 6-1, 6-1 win over Fabiana Mersan at the No. 1 position. UAB's Caroline Faught was even more dominant, dropping just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Natalia Nunes at the No. 5 spot.
"I'm really excited to get our first win in our first match out," UAB head coach Krissy Hall said. "I'm looking forward to the team building on this win as we get deeper into the season."
Evelien Strijker (No. 2), Paula Alvarez (No. 3) and Jenny Cape (No. 4) also won in straight sets for the Blazers.
Brittany DeFelice rounded out the sweep with a match-tiebreaker victory over Laura Stack at No. 6 singles. DeFelice came from behind for a 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 victory.
With the match moved inside, the doubles portion of the contest was not played.
UAB opens its 2011 season at 1-0, while Belmont dropped to 0-4 on the campaign. The Blazers return to action Thursday, hosting North Alabama at 1 p.m. at the Brook Highland Racquet Club.
