UAB Women's Tennis Completes Day One At Rice Invite

HOUSTON -- UAB women's tennis players Caroline Faught, Jenny Cape and Richole Berger each advanced Friday with main draw singles victories on the first day of the Rice Invitational.
Faught earned a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Houston's Dionne Sanders in Flight 3, while Berger moved on in Flight 7 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over UTEP's Ximena Fuentes.
Cape, who took first place in her flight at last weekend's Steve Baras Fall Classic, won her opening Flight 5 match over Lee's Laura Servise 6-3, 6-1. Cape has now won her past four singles matches this fall.
All three players will compete in the main draw semifinals on Saturday. Giorgia Romeo, Paula Alvarez, Menanteau Moolman and Rachel Cohen are also competing this weekend and will be playing in consolation matches on Saturday after opening-round losses on Friday.
Three Blazer doubles teams will also be competing on Saturday in back draw contests. Saturday's action is scheduled to include one round of both singles and doubles play.

Servise (Lee); 6-3, 6-1. Flight 6: van Den Berth (Texas St.) def. Moolman (UAB); 6-3, 6-3. Flight 7: Berger (UAB) def. Fuentes (UTEP); 6-3, 6-2. Flight 8: Siegel (Tulane) def. Cohen (UAB); 6-3, 6-2.

Flight 1: Guzman/Harmath (Rice) def. Alvarez/Faught (UAB); 8-6; Gabb/Caffey (Lee) def. Alvarez/Faught (UAB); 8-5. Flight 2: Elster/Hamlin (Tulane) def. Romeo/Cape (UAB); 8-1; Van Berlo/Bengston (So. Miss) def. Romeo/Cape (UAB); 8-4. Flight 3: Servise/Williamson (Lee) def. Berger/Cohen (UAB), 8-6; Bradley/Rogers (So. Miss) def. Berger/Cohen (UAB); 8-4.
