Berger, Moolman Advance To Quarters At ITA Regional

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Richole Berger and Menanteau Moolman advanced to the quarterfinals of the B singles draw Friday on the first day of the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships.
Berger lost just six total games over two straight-set wins against LSU's Hayley Everett and Mississippi State's Vivian Pietraroia. Moolman had a first-round bye and then breezed to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jacksonville State's Aleksandra Cmilijic.
Jenny Cape also earned an opening-round win in the B draw before falling in three sets in her second outing of the day.
UAB also had four players competing in the A singles draw. Caroline Faught turned in the Blazers' top performance with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Samford's Kristin Lewis before falling in three sets in her second-round match.
Evelien Strijker, Paula Alvarez and Giorgia Romeo each lost their first-round matches and their consolation contests. All three players suffered losses to seeded players.
Three Blazer doubles teams also lost their opening matches Friday and will be competing in consolation draws on Saturday.
All matches this weekend are being played at the Samford Tennis Complex or the Lakeshore Tennis Center.
