Romeo, Cape Advance To Semis In Singles, Doubles At UTC

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- UAB women's tennis players Giorgia Romeo and Jenny Cape went undefeated Friday on the opening day of Chattanooga's Steve Baras Fall Classic.
Both players are seeded fourth in their singles flights, and both won two matches Friday to advance into the semifinals.
After a straight-set win in her first match of the top draw, Romeo went the distance in her second outing of the day. The senior rallied after dropping the first set to defeat Chattanooga's Emily Hangstefer in a third-set tiebreaker, 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (2).
Cape breezed into the semis of her draw, losing only seven games total on the tournament's opening day against Julia Paulson of Wofford and Alyssa Bellini of Lipscomb.
Romeo and Cape also teamed together in doubles as one of two UAB duos to advance in main draw matches. The pair took out the top fight's second-seeded team, Middle Tennessee's Alex Dachos and Yuri Nomoto, 9-7.
UAB's Caroline Faught and Menanteau Moolman also advanced in their doubles flight with an 8-5 victory over Eastern Kentucky's Myriem Mhirit and Saioa Oscoz.
Both doubles teams moved into the semifinal round, which will be contested Saturday along with the semifinals of the singles main draws.
Portions of the consolation brackets will also be played Saturday. For UAB, Faught, Moolman and Rachel Cohen will be active in those back draws after opening-round losses on Friday.

Cohen (UAB); 7-5, 7-6 (3).
