BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB football team practiced for approximately two hours on the UAB practice field Tuesday morning. The Blazers (1-3, 1-1 C-USA) continue to prepare for their third Conference USA contest to begin the season, when the Southern Miss Golden Eagles visit Legion Field on Thursday, Oct. 1.
The Blazers practiced in helmets and no pads during the morning session at the UAB practice facility. UAB head coach Neil Callaway was pleased with his team's attitude during Tuesday's practice.
"We had a lot of energy today," Callaway said. "We are still going over Southern Miss stuff. The quick turnaround makes it difficult, but overall it was a good day"
Callaway was not only pleased with his team's attitude on Tuesday, but he has been impressed with the energy level all week despite the shake up in the normal practice routine due to playing a Thursday night game.
"I've felt we have had a lot of energy the last two days and I think our guys are excited," Callaway said. "With it being a short week this week, we will keep preparing. Tomorrow we'll do a little more than we normally would on a day before a game."
The Blazers will be looking for their first victory over the Golden Eagles on the gridiron in what will be the 10th meeting between the two rivals. Thursday's game will mark the sixth time the teams have met at Legion Field.
According to Callaway, the Golden Eagles will be a tough opponent and it will be no easy task for the Blazers to earn their first victory in the series.
"Southern Miss is very talented on both sides of the ball," Callaway said. "Offensively, they have tremendous wide receivers and running backs. I think their quarterback is the key and what makes their offense go. He does a great job of managing the game for them. Defensively, they have a lot of team speed, particularly at linebacker and in the secondary. It will be a big challenge for us."
The Blazers and the Golden Eagles will kick off at 7 p.m. CT on Thursday at Legion Field. The game will be nationally televised on CBS College Sports.
In addition, the matchup will be carried on the Blazers ISP Sports Network and can be heard in the Birmingham area on flagship station WUHT-FM 107.7 with David Crane (play-by-play) and Jake Arians (color) on the call. The pregame show will begin 90 minutes prior to kickoff.
