BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB softball team improved to 2-1 in Conference USA with a 1-0 shutout victory over Southern Miss on Sunday at George Ward Park. Freshman pitcher Lindsey Croft (4-7) struck out a season-high nine batters in the win.
"It was big win for us," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. "We came out hitting the ball well and were able to keep that mentality and intensity the entire game."
Freshman Catherine Douglass scored the game's only run early in the first inning after sophomore Amanda Allen singled through the middle of the infield.
Both teams played great defense and battled back and forth over the next six innings. In the sixth inning Southern Miss had the potential game-tying run thrown out at home after a double by Megan Hill. The stout UAB defense played a major role in the win along with the pitching of Croft.
"Lindsey threw a great game for us," said Townsend. "She did everything we asked of her. The rest of the team stepped up and made the key outs when we needed them."
Along with the nine strikeouts, Croft allowed only five hits and one walk to pick up her fourth victory on the year. It was also her second complete-game shutout this season.
Offensively the Blazers scattered eight hits with Allen and senior Andrea Rogers both going 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Blazers improve to 8-10 overall and 2-1 in C-USA. The Golden Eagles are now 10-13-1 on the season with a 1-2 league record.
UAB returns to action on Tuesday as it faces No. 1-ranked Alabama at George Ward Park at 6:30 p.m. CT. Saint Louis comes to town on Wednesday for a doubleheader scheduled to start at 2 p.m. CT.
