BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Junior guard Elijah Millsap was tabbed the Conference USA Rookie of the Week, announced league officials on Monday. Both the Player of the Week, UCF's Isaac Sosa, and the Rookie of the Week were voted on by a media panel representing each conference member.
"This is a deserving honor for Eli," UAB head coach Mike Davis said. "He had a terrific weekend and played a big role in us getting two wins. I think he has a lot of potential and I am thankful the media from around the league honored him."
Millsap had an outstanding debut in a UAB uniform. The transfer from Louisiana-Lafayette earned all-tournament honors, scoring double-figures in all three contests while leading the Blazers to a 2-1 record in the Hispanic College Fund Classic in Kent, Ohio. The Blazers shared first-place honors in the three-day event with Green Bay and tournament host Kent State.
In his first game at UAB, Millsap was nearly unstoppable, collecting a double-double with a game-high 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Blazers to a 68-56 victory over Green Bay. He was just one rebound shy of another double-double with 10 points and nine boards in a win against Samford Sunday.
Through UAB's first three contests, Millsap leads the Blazers in scoring (16.7), rebounds (7.3), assists (2.7) and steals (1.7).
Millsap will lead UAB in a pair of contests this week. On Tuesday, the Blazers will travel to take on instate foe Jacksonville State at 7:45 p.m. UAB will play its first home contest of the 2009-10 campaign when it hosts Georgia on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Bartow Arena. That contest will be televised live on CSS.
