UAB Earns Second Seed In Conference USA Tournament

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's basketball team has earned the No. 2 seed in the 2008 Conference USA Tournament, which will be played in Memphis, Tenn. on March 12-15. With the second seed, the Blazers will have a first round bye and await the winner of No. 7 Tulsa and No. 10 East Carolina. The contest will be televised on CSS, with tip off set for noon on Thursday, March 13.
UAB tied the school record for Conference USA wins in a season, closing play with a 12-4 league mark. The Blazers finished the regular season with a 22-9 overall record, marking the program's fourth-20 win season over the last five seasons, and for the 18th time in the 29th year of existence.
The Blazers have played both East Carolina and Tulsa once this season, with both contests being played at Bartow Arena. UAB captured a 77-59 victory over the Pirates back on Jan. 23, and also secured an 84-70 win against the Golden Hurricane on March 5.
For the third consecutive year, regular season champion Memphis earned a first round bye as the No. 1 seed. Other teams receiving first-round byes include No. 3 Houston and No. 4 UCF. Wednesday's first round match-ups feature: No. 7 Tulsa vs. No. 10 East Carolina at Noon, No. 6 UTEP vs. No. 11 SMU at 2:30 p.m., No. 8 Marshall vs. No. 9 Tulane at 6 p.m., and No. 5 Southern Miss vs. No. 12 Rice at 8:30 p.m. CT.
In Thursday's quarterfinal round, No. 2 UAB will take on the winner of the Tulsa-East Carolina game at Noon and No. 3 Houston will face the winner of the UTEP-SMU match-up beginning at 2:30 p.m. No. 1 seed Memphis will battle either Marshall or Tulane at 6 p.m., while No. 4 seed UCF will close out Thursday night against the winner of the Southern Miss-Rice contest at 8:30 p.m.
