BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB softball team fell victim to the long ball, falling 10-1 to Alabama, Thursday night at George Ward Park.
The Blazers (13-11) took the lead in the first inning with Holly Krzan tripling to start the inning and Leigh Walker lining her home. The Crimson Tide (18-1) responded with their first of three home runs to take the lead 2-1.
Alabama would go on to hit long balls in the third and seventh innings. Crimson Tide homers accounted for seven of the 10 runs on the night.
Walker was the Blazers' key performer both offensively and defensively. The second baseman went 2-for-3 at the plate and made three outstanding plays in the field. Her line shot off the glove of a diving 3rd baseman in the first allowed Krzan, putting UAB up 1-0.
Krzan's triple was the sixth of her career and the first of the season for UAB.
Walker's finest defensive play of the game came in the bottom of the sixth when she fielded a knocked down behind second and quickly picked up the ball to gun down Kelley Montalvo at the plate.
Lauren Parker went 2-for-5 for the Crimson Tide and drove in five runs. She hit a three-run homer in the third and plated two with her a double to left center later in the ballgame.
Jennifer Nelson (7-8) was the losing pitcher for UAB. She gave up five runs on four hits. Kayla Harris threw four innings in relief and was hit for five runs.
Kelsi Dunne (7-1) was credited with the victory in her relief role. She tossed three hit-less innings and struck out five.
The Blazers open their 2008 conference slate this weekend when they take on UTEP in a three-game series in El Paso, Texas. Saturday's doubleheader is schedule for a 3 p.m. MST start.
