Harris Tosses One-Hitter In Blazers Victory

HATTIESBURG, Miss. --- Kayla Harris threw and one-hitter and Andrea Rogers hit her first home run of the season helping the UAB softball team defeat Southern Miss 3-0 in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday. UAB dropped the first game of the series, 8-1.
UAB is 18-20 and 5-6 in the conference heading into the rubber game of the series Sunday. The Lady Eagles move to 17-19 overall and 3-8 after the doubleheader split on Saturday.
It was the second one-hit game for the junior pitcher. Harris (8-6) matched her win total from last season with the win and recorded her seventh-career shutout.
Rogers' solo homer in the top of the seventh made broke her 98 at bat sreak without a home run. Seven Blazers reached on base hits in the victory, including Laura Callaway who extended her hitting streak to five games in the third inning with a single to left field.
Harris' only hit allowed came in the sixth inning on an infield single that became a foot race to the bag. Holly Krzan, who was playing first base, fielded the ball and suffled it to Leigh Walker who could not beat Kristin Pilgrim to first.
The only hard ball hit off the junior was a line drive shot to the Kayla Orr playing shortstop.
Krzan provided the Blazers with the early 2-0 lead with an RBI single down the left field line. Krzan came to the plate with the chance to drive in the runs after the Lady Eagles failed to cover first base on a chooper by Caley Walden to second base, that would have ended the inning.
Harris' other one-hit start came against Eastern Michigan last season.
Rogers' last homer was a walk-off grand slam against Chattanooga on May 3.
The Blazers fell victim to a four-run third inning in the first game that helped Southern Miss win, 8-1.
UAB scored its only run of the game when Krzan scored on a sacrifice fly by Rogers.
Southern Miss scored lead 2-0 before its big inning, which was capped by Kristin Chaney's inside the park home run. The four runs that scored were all unearned off pitcher Jennifer Nelson.
Chaney's homer was a line drive down the right field line that Kayla Harris couldn't catch on her diving attempt.
The Blazers cut the deficit with their only run of the game in the sixth. The game was then held up by a 98-minute weather delay in the bottom of the sixth.
Southern Miss finished the scoring with two runs in the sixth when play resumed.
Callaway continued to stay hot with two of the three Blazers' hits in the game. In her last the freshman is hitting .440 with 11 hits, including her first career home run.
Krzan's double to right center in the sixth was the other UAB hit.
Nelson fell to 10-14 on the year, giving up eight runs on eight hits and striking out four. Southern Miss' Samantha Davis was the winning pitcher. She gave up three hits and struck out six.
Krzan's double to start the sixth inning was the 11th of the season and 48th of her career.
UAB will go for its second straight series victory in the rubber game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
