UAB Statement Regarding Synchronized Swimming Program

"When we instituted synchronized swimming in 1999, the NCAA and UAB believed it would grow in participation and popularity. That growth has not occurred, as evidenced by the fact that to date fewer than 10 schools have indicated to the NCAA that they plan to field varsity programs next year, meaning the sport possibly will no longer be an NCAA-sponsored program.
Limited resources and wise use of those resources require that UAB examine new women's athletic opportunities in sports that have a higher likelihood for growth and participation. We are exploring our options in this regard.
UAB will honor its scholarship obligations to our student-athletes throughout what would be their participation eligibility. Additionally, our coaches will be retained until June 30, 2008."
