UAB Softball Drops Decisions to Sacramento State and California

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- The UAB softball team dropped decisions to Sacramento State and California Friday at the first day of the Mustang Classic.
The Blazers (8-7) lost a marathon game to Sacramento State, 15-8 before falling to California 10-2 in six innings.
"We learned a lot today that will be helpful later in the season," head coach Marla Townsend said. "The teams in this tournament that we are playing are really going to helps us when we get to conference play."
UAB began the day with a three-hour seven inning game with Sacramento State. The Blazers rallied to make it a 7-6 game in the fourth inning, after the Hornets built a five-run lead. Sacramento State scored four runs in two straight innings to pull away from UAB.
Both teams combined for 20 walks, which lead to 11 of the game's 22 runs, which was one of the factors in the length of the game. In all 87 batters came to bat.
Andrea Rogers drove in three runs in the loss and was 3-of-3 from the plate.
The Blazers' rally in the fourth was aided in large part by Cameron Skates who drove in two runners with a single to left that was misplayed allowing a third runner to score. Skates finished 2-of-4.
UAB rallied in the first inning scoring two runs, after giving up three runs on no hits to the Hornets to begin the game.
In the second game, The Blazers scored the first runs with Leigh Walker scoring on a passed ball after reaching leading off the inning with a walk. California responded however with four runs to take a three-run lead after the inning.
Caley Walden recorded two of the Blazers' four hits and Kayla Harris drove in one of UAB's runs.
Harris (4-2) was credited with the loss after lasting 4 1/3 innings striking out two and walking seven.
The Golden Bears would score the game-winning run on a hit by pitch with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The start of the games were pushed back an hour due to weather conditions.
