SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. ---- The UAB softball team jumped out to an early lead in its 9-1 victory over Santa Clara Saturday morning at the Mustang Classic.
The Blazers (9-7) set the tone early, scoring five runs in the first inning. Kayla Harris delivered the exclamation with a two-run homer and chased the Santa Clara stater from the game after recording just one. All but one of the runs were earned in the inning.
As a team the Blazers knocked out 10 hits, with Andrea Rogers collecting three singles and Leigh Walker, Holly Krzan and Harris each with two hits. Harris picked up three RBIs in the win, while Laura Callaway and Holly Krzan each driving in two.
UAB scored runs in the third, sixth and seventh that added to the largest run total of the season. It was the first victory for the Blazers at the Mustang Classic.
Jennifer Nelson (5-4) struck out 13 for the third time this season, bouncing back nicley from a tough start on Friday. She gave up three hits and walked three.
Santa Clara's (0-14) only run was scored in the first inning but only after UAB took its big lead.
Walker started the inning with a single to left and Caley Walden reaching on an error. Krzan followed with an two-run single and scored on a misplayed fly ball off the bat of Rogers. Harris then hit her second home run of the season to deep right center field putting the Blazers up by five.
The Blazers' scheduled game against Cal Poly was postponed due to playing conditions.
