BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's soccer team continues its spring schedule as it defeated cross-town foe Samford, 2-1, Thursday evening. The Blazers got goals from freshmen Danya Barsalona and Allison Auchter to lead the way over the Bulldogs.
"It was a very productive game for us," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "We played against a good, well-coached Samford team.
"The spring schedule is all about developing your team. Both teams were experimenting and trying to do different things. Overall, I think both us and Samford got a lot out of the match."
The first-half ended with no score by either squad. In the second half, Samford struck first with a goal mid-way through the period. UAB quickly retaliated as Barsalona knocked in the Blazers' first goal of the game just four seconds later.
The Blazers broke the 1-1 tie when Auchter hit a shot from 25-yards out with five minutes left in the contest to put UAB on top, 2-1.
"There was just not a lot of attacking in the first half," said Harbin. "Both teams stepped up in the second half and got a lot of great attacking opportunities."
UAB's next outing will be on March 31 when the Blazers host their annual Alumni Game. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at West Campus Field.
