Blazers Swing Past Tennessee-Martin, 6-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's tennis team improved to 9-1 on the year with a 6-1 victory over Tennessee-Martin on Saturday at Brook Highland Racquet Club. Senior Julia von Samson ran her win streak to nine matches with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles.
The Blazers used their full roster to earn its fifth-straight victory on Saturday.
"This is the first time in years that we were able to have all eight girls in action," said Mert Ertunga who won his 198th match as a head coach. "It puts our strength, our depth, on display. We finally have Annemieke healthy after a couple weeks of recuperating so that was some great addition help."
The Blazers swept the doubles to earn the first point of the match. Seniors Annemiek Elsholz and von Samson won 8-5 at No. 1 and junior Gulsah Esen and senior Nischa Maier-Knapp won 8-3 at No. 2. At flight three, junior Antonia Nugent and freshman Magdalena Czernik won 8-2.
In singles action, Esen needed three sets to earn a victory, winning 6-7, 6-4, 10-8, while at No. 2, Maier-Knapp earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory. Von Samson won at No. 3 and Elsholz clinched the match with her 6-3, 6-0 triumph at flight four.
Tennessee-Martin got its only win on the day at No. 5, while at No. 6, UAB junior Seden Soyalp won 6-0, 6-3.
UAB will take to the road this week to take on Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa. on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
