Petrov Earns Three First Place Finishes, UAB Takes Second at Southern Regionals

ATHENS, Ga.-- The UAB synchronized swimming team finished second at the Southern Regional Championship on Sunday in Athens, Ga. The Blazers got a series of first place finishes at the event with senior Sara Petrov and sophomore Meryl Grandia helping earn top finishes in the duet and trio events. Petrov also took first in the "A" elements competition.
UAB earned an overall score of 91.000 to garner its second place honors, finishing just behind champion Incarnate Ward which totaled a score of 93.000.
Grandia and Petrov teamed to win the duet competition with a score of 92.000, while juniors Frances Halloran and Maria Cecilia Garcia were fourth in that event with a mark of 88.667.
The tandem of Grandia and Petrov earned their second first place finish in the trio event when they teamed with Halloran to post a top mark of 91.333.
Garcia was second in the solo event with a score of 90.000, while UAB was also the silver finisher in the team event as Garcia, Halloran, Grandia, Petrov, senior Andrea Dash and senior Vanessa Dash earned a mark of 92.167.
In the "B" figures, Vanessa Dash finished first with a score of 72.162, while her sister Andrea was third at 72.005.
In the "A" elements, Petrov recorded a score of 84.810 to finish first, while Garcia and Grandia finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Halloran was ninth in the event.
UAB will next be in action on March 21 when it travels to Norton, Mass. to compete in the U.S. Collegiate Championship.
