BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Two women's soccer players with ties to UAB, one past and one present, have taken their talents to the championship level. Current UAB goalkeeper Katie Forbis will be playing in the USL W-League's Final Four with the Charlotte Lady Eagles (10-4-0) on Friday, August 4 while former Blazer standout, Briana McCarty, participated in the WPSL's championship game with the River Cities Futbol Club during the weekend of July 29th.
Forbis and the Lady Eagles will take on the Ottawa Fury Women on August 4 at 8 p.m. EDT at Swangard Stadium in Vancouver, British Columbia. The USL W-League is the highest league of women's soccer in North America and ranks near the top of women's soccer internationally. Earlier this season, the Lady Eagles captured the W-League's Central Conference Championship with a 1-0 win over the Richmond Kickers Destiny.
McCarty, who finished her collegiate soccer career at UAB in 2004, showcased her talents in the Women's Premier Soccer League's championship game on July 29th. An All-Conference USA defender for the Blazers, she used her skills to help the River Cities F.C. to a 11-2-2 record, the WPSL Midwest Conference championship and a trip to the championship game during the team's first year in existence. River Cities fell to Long Island, 1-0, as the Fury captured the 2006 WPSL National Championship.
