BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Friday is the day that all of the dedication, hard work and sweat of preseason training is put to the test. That is the day that the UAB women's soccer team opens its 2006 regular season schedule against ACC opponent Clemson.
The Blazers will tangle with the Tigers of Clemson University in a 7 p.m. EDT match at Riggs Field in Clemson, S.C. This will mark the first regular-season game of the season for both squads.
UAB has participated in two exhibition contests to prepare them for the season, coming away with victories in both games. The first preseason test for the Blazers ended in a 5-1 win over Montevallo. More recently, UAB topped Mississippi State, 4-1, in its final exhibition game of the year.
Similar to UAB, Clemson has also played in a pair of exhibition matches during the preseason, earning a 4-0 victory over Davidson and falling to Georgia, 1-0.
Clemson is just the first of a string of tough, non-conference opponents for the Blazers. The Blazers will head west during the first weekend of September to participate in the OSU Nike Invitational in Corvallis, Ore. UAB will face Cal State Northridge and host school Oregon State on September 1 and September 3 respectively.
The Blazers' home opener will be on September 8 when UAB holds its annual UAB Nike Classic presented by The Wynfrey Hotel. UAB will face Duke on September 8 in a 7 p.m. match at West Campus Field.
