BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB women's soccer team hosted its annual alumni weekend at West Campus Field on April 14-15. The Blazers had an informal gathering Friday evening at the Lakeview Oyster House with friends and family to kick off the weekend's events. Saturday featured the alumni game and dinner at Rojo.
The alumni game Saturday featured current UAB players against former Blazer standouts. The event was highlighted by the opportunity to match up some of the current players against standout alumni of the past. Although UAB won the match, it was a fun, friendly, family-like atmosphere that celebrated the strong tradition of women's soccer at UAB.
"It's always great to get together with our former players," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "Although fitness eventually becomes a factor, the game always starts out being extremely competitive. In addition to the game it's a wonderful opportunity for our current players to get to know the people who laid the groundwork for our program and for the alums to see the current players are doing their best to carry on their traditions. All in all it's a fun atmosphere."
UAB will finish the spring season this weekend at the Governors Cup hosted by Birmingham-Southern. The Blazers will play two 45 minute matches at West Campus Field prior to the final at BSC. The first match at 9:00 a.m. will feature UAB vs. Samford. The second match at 11:00 a.m. will feature UAB vs. Troy. The final will be played at BSC at 4:30 p.m. with the winner of the UAB bracket vs. the winner of the bracket featuring Alabama, Auburn, Alabama A&M and BSC.
