MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- UAB finished the 2005-06 Conference USA race as league runners-up to Memphis and will be the second seed in this week's C-USA tournament at the FedExForum in Memphis, Tenn. The Blazers (22-5, 12-2 C-USA) earned a first-round bye and await the winner of Wednesday's Rice versus SMU contest in a noon CT contest on Thursday, March 9.
Mike Anderson's club earned the second place and second seed with help from UCF which upset UTEP in Orlando Saturday night, 66-55. Had UTEP won, they would have tied UAB for second place and won the tie breaker as a result of their win over UAB on Feb. 8.
"I've told our guys all along, we worry about our next opponent and the game that is next on the schedule and the rest of it will take care of itself," Anderson said. "If you get caught up in worrying about things you can't control, then you don't focus on the things you can. I said it last year and I said it again this year - `We're going to be alright,' and we were."
The Blazers play the noon game on Thursday as a result of Memphis' preference to play its quarterfinal match up at 6 p.m. Memphis was given the preference as the host institution for the tournament. Should UAB advance to the semifinals on Friday, they would play at either 3:30 p.m. or 6 p.m. The highest remaining seed plays in the 3:30 p.m. game, meaning if Memphis also wins Thursday, UAB would get the 6 p.m. contest against the winner of the UTEP quarterfinal. The Miners will play the winner of Wednesday's first round game between Tulsa and Southern Miss.
Wednesday's first-round games feature Rice and SMU in the 7-10 game at noon CT; No. 6 Tulsa versus No. 11 Southern Miss at 2:30 p.m. CT; No. 8 Tulane and No. 9 Marshall at 6 p.m. CT and No. 5 UCF against No. 12 East Carolina at 8:30 p.m. CT. Thursday's schedule is UAB against the Rice-SMU winner at noon; UTEP against the Tulsa-Southern Miss winner at 2:30 p.m.; Memphis taking on the Tulane-Marshall winner at 6 p.m. and Houston battling the UCF-East Carolina winner at 8:30 p.m.
Tickets in UAB's allotment are still available by contacting the UAB ticket office at (205) 975-UAB1 or by visiting the UAB athletic website at www.uabsports.com.
The quarterfinals and semifinals of the tournament will be televised live by CSTV. The championship game, slated for 10:35 a.m. CT on Saturday, March 11, will air on CBS. The radio broadcasts of UAB's games can be heard on the ISP/Blazer Sports Network found locally in Birmingham on WYDE, 101.1 FM.
