Women's Tennis Shuts Out Memphis, 7-0

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. --- The UAB women's tennis team improved to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in Conference USA action with a 7-0 victory over Memphis Sunday at the Myrtle Beach City Tennis Complex. The Blazers won all three doubles matches and six singles competitions en route to the victory.
"We needed this win for conference seeding purposes," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "We've had a lot of competitive matches against Memphis over the years, so it's nice to be able to come away with a convincing win."
UAB took the doubles point after claiming all three matches. In the No. 1 tilt, Blazers Annemieke Elsholz and Julia von Samson were 8-6 winners over Andrea Feichtinger and Alex Tijoe. At the No. 2 position, UAB's Gulsah Esen and Ornischa Maier-Knapp beat Kristin Noble and Christina Wieser, 8-4. Blazers Antonia Nugent and Seden Soyalp defeated Flavia Russo and Ekin Zafir, 8-3, in the No. 3 slot.
The Blazers continued to dominate in singles, winning all six matches in straight sets. In the No. 1 match, UAB's Maier-Knapp tallied a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Feichtinger. In No. 2 singles, Blazer von Samson was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Noble. UAB's Elsholz beat Zafir, 6-0, 6-3.
In the No. 4 tilt, Blazer Esen recorded a 6-1, 6-3 win against Wieser. At the No. 5 position, UAB's Tanzeem beat Tijoe, 6-2, 6-1, while Blazer Soyalp defeated Russo, 6-1, 6-0, in the No. 6 slot.
The Blazers face Charleston Southern Monday.
