Blazers Dominate Charleston Southern, 6-1

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The UAB women's tennis team won its second-straight match by defeating Charleston Southern, 6-0, Monday afternoon. In the victory, UAB's Ornischa Maier-Knapp tallied her fifth-consecutive win at the No. 1 singles position and improved to 8-5 overall this season.
"We caught Charleston Southern a little short handed today," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "However, it's still a good road win for us. The girls have played well the last two matches and we hope to continue that Wednesday when we face Coastal Carolina."
The Blazers (9-5, 1-1) began the match by sweeping through doubles play. In the No. 1 slot, UAB's Annemieke Elsholz and Julia von Samson defeated Rebecca Franzi and Meryam Tazi, 8-4. At the No. 2 position, Blazers Gulsah Esen and Ornischa Maier-Knapp beat Jessica Bair and Nazli Kutuk, 8-1. Finally, Antonia Nugent and Seden Soyalp of UAB recorded an 8-1 win over Ashley Heard and Nathalie Stopelli in the No. 3 tilt.
UAB took control of the match in singles play, winning five of six matches. In No. 1 singles, Blazer Maier-Knapp was a 4-6, 7-5, 10-8 winner over Franzi. In the No. 2 match, UAB's von Samson tallied a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Kutuk. The Blazers' Elsholz defeated Jessica Bair, 6-1, 6-0, in the No. 3 slot. At the No. 4 position, Nugent of UAB beat Courtney Hargreaves, 6-1, 6-0. Finally, in the No. 5 tilt, Blazer Samrin Tanzeem was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Stopelli.
Charleston Southern's lone point came in No. 6 singles, as Ashley Heard defeated UAB's Seden Soyalp, 7-6, 6-4.
The Blazers face Coastal Carolina Wednesday at 1 p.m. (CT).
