IRVING, Texas -- After leading his team to a road victory at SMU that gave the squad its 20th win of the season, UAB senior guard Marvett McDonald has been named the Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending February 26.
McDonald caught fire in the Blazers 73-68 road win at SMU, scoring a career-high 39 points on 12-of-21 field goal shooting that included a school-record tying eight three-pointers. McDonald tied Rice's Morris Almond for the best single-game scoring performance of the season with the 39 points. His tally came two points shy of current Cincinnati head coach Andy Kennedy's UAB record 41 points and tied the school mark of eight three-point field goals made, a record shared by Kennedy (twice) and Barry Bearden.
McDonald eclipsed his previous career-best by 12 points and added four rebounds, two steals and an assist in the effort. The victory gave UAB its fourth straight 20-win season and increased McDonald's season scoring average by an entire point (from 14.3 to 15.3) in the course of just one game.
It is the second such honor for McDonald this year. He was also named C-USA Player of the Week Jan. 2. The award is the fourth for UAB this season. Squeaky Johnson has been named the league's player of the week on two occasions.
UAB next faces league-leading and No. 3 Memphis in Bartow Arena at 8:30 p.m. CT on Thursday in a game slated to air live on ESPN2.
