UAB Visits Southern Miss In Nationally-Televised Contest

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's basketball team travels to Hattiesburg, Miss., Saturday afternoon to face Southern Miss in a nationally-televised Conference USA showdown. The game will air live at 2 p.m. CT on CSTV.
Mike Anderson's Blazers are coming off an 87-82 home win over Tulane in Bartow Arena Wednesday. Marvett McDonald and Paul Delaney each scored 13 points to lead five players in double figures and Squeaky Johnson tied his career-high with 11 assists in the UAB win. But the Blazers saw a 14-point second-half lead evaporate as Tulane fought back to make the game close.
"I think when you get to that 10-minute mark (of the second half) that's when we should be turning up our defensive intensity and getting stops," UAB head coach Mike Anderson said. "We didn't do that in that particular game, so that's something we've got to get better at. We were doing it earlier in the year. Our job now is to make sure we finish games off for 40 minutes."
UAB has won 14 of its last 16 games and defeated Southern Miss in that stretch, 87-73 on Jan. 28 in
UAB leads the nation in turnovers forced per game, causing 22.2 per contest. Southern Miss had 18 against the Blazers in the previous meeting.
Southern Miss is 8-17 on the season and 2-8 in Conference
Courtney Beasley leads Southern Miss in scoring, averaging 11.4 points per game. Jarekus Singleton, Jason Forte and David Cornwell all average just over eight points per contest.
"It's a big game for UAB and it's a big game for Southern Miss,"
Southern Miss out-rebounds its opponents, 32.2-30.3, but is being outscored on the year, 61.5-68.6.
In their last outing, the Golden Eagles were beaten by No. 3 Memphis, 80-41. Southern Miss was smothered in the first half and scored just 10 points in the frame to the Tigers' 34.
