BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- UAB junior defender Philo Mbong has been named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Blazers finish second at the 2005 Nike Classic.
The Norman, Okla., native earned a spot on the 2005 UAB NIKE Classic All-Tournament Team for her performance over the weekend. Philo helped mark Tournament MVP Pip Meo of Kennesaw State in a 2-0 loss, limiting her to just one shot and no points. She also single-handedly shut down former C-USA standout Jamie Craft in a 1-0 shutout of former conference foe Louisville.
"I am very proud of Philo," UAB head coach Paul Harbin said. "She has worked hard and progressed significantly as a defender over the past year. Her play in the NIKE Classic this weekend was outstanding."
Mbong has started every match for the Blazers and is the first UAB player to receive the award this year. In 2004, she was a member of the Blazers' second-round NCAA Tournament team, while earning her second varsity letter.
UAB is 2-2 this season and will travel to Tuscaloosa Friday night to face Alabama (3-1). The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. and will be played at the University of Alabama Soccer Complex.
