BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- UAB junior goalkeeper Katie Forbis was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the league office Monday. Forbis, who had a combined 26 saves in two matches, set a new school record with 16 saves Sunday against No. 1 North Carolina.
"Over the last two years Katie has been stellar in C-USA and NCAA Tournament play," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "Our goal this season was for her to develop that same intensity and focus earlier in the season. It's great to see her playing with such confidence and poise this early, especially going into conference play next week."
Her notable performances against UNC and No. 7 Duke also earned her a place on the Duke adidas Classic All-Tournament Team. This season, Forbis has recorded 55 saves and has a .833 saves percentage over seven games. She is the second Blazer to earn the award this year, Philo Mbong received the honor on Sept. 6. UAB also set a team record for most saves Sunday with 19 against the Tar Heels.
The Blazers return home to face cross-town foe Birmingham-Southern Friday night. The match is schedule to start at 7 p.m. and will be played at West Campus Field.
