Birmingham, Ala. --- The UAB women's soccer team opens the 2005 regular season on Friday when the Blazers face Jacksonville State in Jacksonville, Ala., at 7 p.m., on the JSU soccer field. UAB is coming off a 16-6-1 campaign in 2004 that included winning the Conference USA Tournament and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
"I know that we're all excited and ready to open the season," UAB head coach Paul Harbin said. "With their new coaching staff, we know very little about this Jacksonville State team. We do know from preseason scores that they played a solid match against Florida and were leading the game early in the second half. With that in mind we expect it to be a competitive match."
This year, UAB returns five starters and welcomes seven newcomers. UAB leads the overall series 3-0, including a 6-2 victory in Birmingham last season. The 2005 season marks the second-consecutive year that UAB has opened the season with JSU.
The Gamecocks, who earned their second-consecutive berth in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament last season, returns 15 letterwinners from the 2004 squad, including eight starters.
UAB will conclude the road trip in Lincoln, Neb., on Sunday when the Blazers face the Cornhuskers at 1 p.m.
