IRVING, Texas - Former UAB women's soccer standout Briana McCarty was awarded one of seven Conference USA Post-Graduate Scholarships, it was announced by C-USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky on Friday.
McCarty, a senior for the Blazers in 2004, will receive $5,000 after being selected as one of seven winners by the Faculty Athletics Representatives. McCarty was also named the 2004-05 Scholar-Athlete Award Winner for women's soccer within the conference on Thursday. UAB, Memphis, and Tulane led the C-USA with three winners each.
"I am very happy to see Briana continue the UAB women's soccer tradition of producing some of the top student-athletes in Conference USA," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "Briana is our fourth player in nine years to have been chosen as the Conference USA Women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year."
"I am extremely proud of all that she accomplished here at UAB," said Harbin. "Anyone directly associated with our program knows Bri is a very special person and it is exciting to see that her reputation continues to spread beyond our borders," said Harbin."
McCarty, a native of Lawrenceville, Ga., was a two-time first team all-conference pick and was one of just 29 individuals to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship this spring. She helped lead the Blazers to the 2004 C-USA title and an NCAA Tournament appearance. She finished her illustrious career as one of the most decorated players in school history, as McCarty picked up nine individual awards during and after this past season alone. McCarty maintains a 3.93 gpa in psychology.
"I'm also very happy to see that Bri was awarded the Conference USA Post-Graduate Scholarship," said Harbin. "It could not have gone to a more deserving person. She is excited and extremely appreciative," said Harbin. "I know that the scholarship will be well invested as she pursues her doctorate at Washington University beginning this fall."
She was a four-year member of the Dean's List and earned Presidential honors. She plans to pursue a doctorate of occupational therapy at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. The program is currently rated the No. 3 program in the country according to US News and World Report.
The seven recipients of the award were Brianna Dahm of Marquette, Julie DuPont of Cincinnati, Mark Kennedy of Louisville, Christopher Raye of USF, Tiffany Strawn of TCU, Bernadette Washington of Charlotte, and McCarty.
