BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB women's tennis team won the doubles point and four singles matches, as it defeated Middle Tennessee State, 5-2, at Brook Highland Racquet Club Sunday afternoon.
After falling to Southern Miss on Saturday, the Blazers bounced back against the Lady Raiders, breaking a two-match losing streak.
"I am delighted with the team's performance today," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "I felt that following a heartbreaking loss yesterday, it was a big question mark as to how the team would react and play another match less than 24 hours later. It turns out we played our most positive match of the season against a strong opponent who has had our number the last couple of years. My players played and behaved like winners from the first point of the match to the end today.
UAB (11-5, 2-2) started the competition by taking the doubles point after winning at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. In the No. 2 tilt, Blazers Julia von Samson and Annemieke Elsholz beat Ana Maria Cibils and Emily Vest, 8-2. At the No. 3 spot, Jana Wild and Samrin Tanzeem of UAB were 8-6 winners over Jacqui Williams and Claudia Szabo.
The middle of the Blazers' lineup came up big against Middle Tennessee State, as UAB won at the No. 2 through No. 4 positions. In the No. 2 slot, the Blazers' Ornischa Maier-Knapp defeated Cibils, 6-2, 6-2. At the No. 3 position, UAB's von Samson was a 7-5, 7-5 winner over Szabo. Blazer Samrin Tanzeem tallied a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Williams at the No. 4 spot.
UAB's final singles win was in the No. 6 tilt, as Antonia Nugent defeated Vest, 6-1, 6-1.
The Blazers have their final contest of the season on Friday, when they host Cincinnati at 11 a.m.
