BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB women's tennis team concluded its regular season with a 6-1 victory over Conference USA foe Cincinnati Saturday afternoon at Brook Highland Racquet Club. The victory is UAB's eighth win in its last 10 matches.
"This was our last regular season match and one that we desperately wanted to win to end a successful season on a high note," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "It was also important to get this victory for seeding purposes in the upcoming conference tournament. I believe the girls understood the significance of the match and took it seriously. This was also the first match in a long time in which we won at both the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions. I am happy for both Ornischa (Maier-Knapp) and Gulsah (Esen).
UAB, who improved to 12-5 overall and 3-2 in C-USA action this season, began the match by taking the doubles point. The Blazers won at the No. 2 spot, as UAB's Julia von Samson and Annemieke Elsholz beat Jill and Julie Klauck, 8-3. In the No. 3 tilt, Blazers Samrin Tanzeem and Jana Wild were 8-4 winners over Madison Reasoner and Cristina Reyes.
The Blazers continued their winning ways by tallying five singles victories for the decisive win. UAB's Maier-Knapp started things off as she defeated Reyes, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 1 slot. Cincinnati (4-12, 0-3) got its first point of the match, as the Blazers' von Samson lost at the No. 3 position, 6-2, 6-1, to Jill Klauck. In the No. 6 spot, UAB's Jana Wild overpowered Madison Reasoner, 6-1, 6-0, putting the Blazers one win away from the victory. That win came in the No. 5 tilt, as UAB's Annemieke Elsholz recorded a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Julie Klauck.
With the match already decided, UAB tallied its last two wins of the day. At the No. 2 position, UAB's Esen snapped a four-match losing streak with an impressive 7-5, 6-1 defeat of Liu. Blazer Tanzeem then played a marathon match against Hinton, as she won a 10-point third-set tiebreaker for the 7-5, 2-6, 11-9 victory.
The Blazers will next compete in the Conference USA Championships beginning on April 21 in Fort Worth, Texas.
