Blazer Women's Tennis Shuts Out Birmingham-Southern

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB women's tennis team had the most impressive win of its season, as the Blazers defeated Birmingham-Southern, 7-0, at the BSC Tennis Complex on Friday afternoon.
The Blazers (3-2) tallied victories in all three doubles matches, as well as six singles duels. In singles competition, UAB swept through with straight-set wins in all positions. Birmingham-Southern dropped to 1-3 with the loss.
The Blazers' doubles duo of Gulsah Esen and Ornischa Maier-Knapp continued their undefeated season, with an 8-2, win at the No. 2 position over the Panthers' Jennifer Williams and Casey Ragsdale. Esen and Maier-Knapp are now 5-0 on the season.
UAB claimed a 1-0 lead, by sweeping the doubles matches. In the No. 1 tilt, Blazers Annemieke Elsholz and Julia von Samson were 8-4 winners over Rachel Malina and Stephanie Boucher. At the No. 3 position, UAB's freshmen duo of Antonia Nugent and Jana Wild beat BSC's Daisy Humphrey and Laura Kirk, 8-6.
The Blazers continued their winning ways in singles. UAB's sophomore von Samson was a 6-4, 6-0 winner at the No. 1 spot over the Panthers' Williams. In the No. 2 position, freshman Esen defeated Birmingham-Southern's Malina, 6-3, 6-4. UAB's Maier-Knapp tallied a 6-2, 6-0 victory over BSC's Humphrey in the No. 3 tilt. Samrin Tanzeem of UAB beat the Panthers' Ragsdale, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4.
The Blazers had two freshmen in the lineup for the first time during the dual-match season, as Nugent and Wild recorded convincing wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions. Nugent was a 6-1, 6-0 winner in the No. 5 slot, while Wild recorded a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 6.
"This was our best performance of the season," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "I did not expect such convincing win. I'm especially proud of our two freshmen, Antonia and Jana, who performed extremely well today."
UAB opens up conference action when it takes on Memphis on Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. in Memphis, Tenn.
