IRVING, Texas - UAB senior guard Squeaky Johnson used his record-setting steals performance on Sunday and a double-double in his season debut on Friday to take home Conference USA Player of the Week honors for the week ending Nov. 27. It was the first league player of the week award for UAB this year and the first for Johnson's career.
Johnson set a school and conference record for steals in a game, swiping the ball 12 times from South Carolina State in a 79-48 UAB victory on Sunday. The 12 steals is just one shy of the NCAA record of 13 held by Mookie Blaylock. He eclipsed the UAB steals mark of nine and the Conference USA record which was 10.
Johnson opened his senior campaign with a double-double in the Blazers' season debut - an 86-77 win against Massachusetts on Friday. He scored 10 points and assisted on 10 buckets for his second career double-double. In the two wins, Johnson shot .444 (4-for-9) from the field, .400 (2-for-5) from three-point range, and notched an astonishing 8-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Johnson and the Blazers host Western Kentucky on Tuesday in Bartow Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. CT.
