BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The coaches have been hired and the rosters set for Thursday night's UAB men's basketball Green-Gold Scrimmage. Jim Dunaway, co-host of "Today in Alabama" on NBC-13 and the "Dunaway and Brown Show" talk show on WJOX Radio and Rick Karle, sports director at Fox 6, WBRC, will coach the split squad of the 2005-06 UAB Blazers. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Bartow Arena. Admission is free.
"Now, we're going to have some fun," UAB head coach Mike Anderson said. "This is going to exciting for the fans and fun for our guys. It's a chance to put them in game situations with officials, a crowd and the like. I'm anxious to see how the players respond to game-like situations."
A draft was conducted Wednesday afternoon in which Dunaway and Karle traded opportunities to select members of their respective teams. Karle, the coach of the Green Team, will field a roster than includes seniors Marvett McDonald, Demario Eddins, Derrick Broom, Brandon Tobias and Reed Davis, junior Wen Mukubu and sophomore Paul Delaney.
Dunaway's Gold Team will feature seniors Squeaky Johnson and Richard Jones, junior college transfer Maurice Gibbs, sophomore Frank Holmes and freshmen Michael Anderson Jr., Lawrence Kinnard and Roderick Ollie.
The scrimmage will be UAB's final public tune up before its first exhibition contest, a 7:30 p.m. tilt on Thursday, Nov. 10 against West Alabama. The regular season gets underway at noon CT on Friday, Nov. 25 when the Blazers battle UMass in the Hall of Fame Tip-off Classic in Springfield, Mass.
