BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB women's soccer player Pam Cooney was named to the Jewish Sports Review 2004 Women's Soccer All-America Team, it was announced by the Jewish Sports Review publication on Thursday.
Cooney, a sophomore defender from Katy, Texas, was a fixture on the UAB defense in 2004, as she started all 23 games and recorded one assist. She helped lead the Blazers to the 2004 Marriott Conference USA title and their first NCAA Tournament berth in school history. Cooney was one of 11 players named to the first team.
"Over the past two years Pam has been recognized as one of the best players in Conference USA and the South region," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin.
"It's exciting to see her now recognized as one of the top defenders in the country. Often these types of awards go to departing seniors. We're extremely proud of Pam and feel fortunate that she will be a part of our program for two more years," said Harbin.
Cooney, a third-team all-conference selection this season, was selected to the all-tournament team at the C-USA tournament in November. She was a member of the Soccer Buzz Southeast Region All-freshman team as a freshman in 2003 and was a member of the C-USA all-freshman team. Cooney also made the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll last season.
