TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The UAB women's soccer team will hit the road to meet in-state rival Alabama on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Alabama Soccer Complex.
The Blazers (2-3-1) have not been in action since losing to nationally ranked Portland, 3-0, on Sept. 12 in the finale of the Portland Nike Tournament. UAB also lost a tough match to top-five ranked Washington by a score of 1-0 on Sept. 10. The Blazers will be playing their third in-state team this season, previously having lost to Auburn, 3-1, and having beaten Jacksonville State, 6-2, in their season-opener on Aug. 27 in Birmingham, Ala.
UAB leads the all-time series with the Crimson Tide, 3-2-1, and defeated them by a score of 2-1 in the last meeting between the teams, on Aug. 31, 2003 in Birmingham. The Blazers will be looking for their first win over Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The match was originally scheduled for Sept. 17, but Hurricane Ivan forced it to be rescheduled and moved to Tuesday.
"We are excited about the opportunity to play this game and appreciate Alabama head coach Don Staley's willingness to get it rescheduled so quickly," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "Over the last several years, a great rivalry has developed between our programs, and I know the players and fans can look forward to another intensely competitive match," said Harbin.
Alabama is coming off of a 3-2 double-overtime win over Jacksonville State on Sunday in its last game. The Crimson Tide is 4-3 on the season.
The Blazers will open Conference USA play on Friday, Sept. 24 versus Cincinnati at 7 p.m. at West Campus Field.
