UAB Women's Tennis Falls To Charlotte, 5-2

CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- The UAB women's tennis team fell to Conference USA foe Charlotte, 5-2, here on Sunday, snapping its three-match win streak.
"It was a close match," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "Things could have gone either way. Their doubles play was the difference in the game. They are a good team and we just didn't get it done."
UAB (7-11, 2-3) got in a hole early after losing all three doubles matches. In the No. 1 position, the Blazers' Femke de Boer and Annemieke Elsholz fell to Charlotte's Ashleigh Murray and Laura Swain, 8-2. At the No. 2 spot, the 49ers' Ofra Friedman and Kathy Robey defeated UAB's Nadia Dellarciprete and Marrit Jansma, 8-3. Charlotte's Megan Bullins and Ali Piacente were 8-6 winners over the Blazers' Samrin Tanzeem and Julia von Samson in the No. 3 tilt.
In singles action, the Blazers won two matches. In the No. 2 slot, UAB's Elsholz was a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 winner over the 49ers' Friedman. At the No. 6 position, the Blazers' Tanzeem defeated Charlotte's Marilyn Clark, 6-3, 6-4.
Charlotte (8-6) continued to play well in singles action, winning four of six matches. In the No. 1 spot, UAB's de Boer fell to the 49ers' Swain, 6-2, 6-4. The Blazers' Jansma was a 6-4, 6-4 loser to Charlotte's Murray in the No. 3 tilt. UAB's von Samson was defeated by the 49ers' Robey, 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 4 singles match. Finally, in the No. 5 slot, the Blazers' Dellarciprete was a 7-5, 6-4 loser to Charlotte's Piacente.
The UAB women's tennis team will host DePaul on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Brook Highland Racquet Club.
