UAB Women's Tennis Victorious Over Campbell, 4-3

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ----- The UAB women's tennis team tallied their third-straight win as they defeated Campbell, 4-3, here on Saturday. Julia von Samson won her No. 4 singles match to clinch the victory for the Blazers.
UAB's von Samson battled Campbell's Iva Stojancev for the three-set win. von Samson won the first set, 6-4, but Stojancev bounced back to take the second set, 6-3. von Samson was not deterred, as she rallied to take the third set, 6-3, for the match win.
"Julia really came through for us," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "I am very proud of the way she played today. This shows how much tougher she has gotten since the fall season, as her mental toughness has improved tremendously."
UAB (7-10, 2-2) began the match by taking the doubles point with two wins. In the No. 2 position, the Blazers' Annemieke Elzholz and von Samson were 8-4 winners over Campbell's Georgiana Marta and Stojancev. At the No. 3 spot, UAB's Nadia Dellarciprete and Samrin Tanzeem defeated the Camels' Colen Gore and Lin Bunce, 8-1.
The Blazers lone doubles loss came in the No. 1 tilt, as UAB's Femke de Boer and Marrit Jansma fell to Campbell's Pascale Veraverbeke and Carmen Linder, 8-0.
The two teams continued to compete in singles matches, but the bottom-half of the Blazers' lineup came through, tallying wins at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles for the victory. In the No. 5 slot, UAB's Dellarciprete was a 6-4, 7-6 winner over the Camels' Stacey Batkiewicz. At the No. 6 position, the Blazers' Tanzeem defeated Campbell's Bunce, 6-0, 6-0.
In the No. 1 spot, UAB's de Boer fell to the Camels' Linder, 7-5, 6-0. The Blazers' Elsholz was a 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 loser to Pveraverbeke of Campbell in the No. 2 tilt. UAB's Jansma was defeated by the Camels' Marta, 6-1, 1-6, 6-2, in the No. 3 singles match.
The match was finally clinched by the Blazers when von Samson tallied her win in the No. 4 position.
The UAB women's tennis team will next be in action on Sunday as the Blazers stay in Charlotte to face Conference USA foe Charlotte at 10 a.m. (CST).
