BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB senior soccer players Suzanna LaMotte and Briana McCarty were each named to the 2004 NSCAA/adidas Women's South Region Scholar All-America Team, it was announced on Tuesday.
McCarty made the first team while LaMotte earned second-team honors. McCarty has now picked up six different accolades or honors this season. She was recently named to the NSCAA Southeast Regional Team and ESPN Academic All-America Team, and earlier this season was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District IV Team.
McCarty was named the Defensive MVP at the 2004 Marriott Conference USA Tournament, as she helped lead the Blazers to the tournament title and subsequently their first NCAA Tournament appearance in school history. She was named to the All-C-USA first team. She is a three-time recipient of the C-USA Academic Medal of Honor and a three-time member of the C-USA Honor Roll. McCarty is a psychology major with a 3.93 gpa.
LaMotte, a member of the NSCAA Scholar-Athlete All-Region Team in 2003, was one of the leaders of a UAB defense which recorded eight shutouts, which tied a single-season school record, and allowed only six goals in its final nine games. She carries a 3.83 gpa in health education.
"It is always great to see players being recognized for their overall contributions to college athletics," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "Suzanna and Briana have both embraced the full concept of the student-athlete model. On the field, they were major contributors to our last two championship seasons as well as our run into the NCAA Tournament. Off the field, they continued to establish what I call `positive peer pressure" in regards to academics. I am extremely proud of them and what they have accomplished here at UAB."
The NSCAA/adidas 2004 Women's South Region Scholar All-America Team included 36 student-athletes dispersed among three separate teams with 12 members on each team. UAB joined six other schools as the only to place two student-athletes on the squad.
