BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Green and Gold rosters for Thursday night's UAB men's basketball Green-Gold scrimmage were selected today in the 2nd Annual Green-Gold Media Coach Draft at Bartow Arena. The rosters were picked by Green-Gold guest head coaches Ray Melick, columnist for the Birmingham Post-Herald and WJOX sports radio talk show host, and Mike Raita, sports director of WBMA, ABC 33/40 in Birmingham.
The two media members will serve as coaches for the squads on Thursday night. Their duties are all-inclusive, meaning they will provide the pregame, halftime and postgame talks and select starting lineups. UAB men's basketball assistant coaches will be assigned to each squad to provide assistance during the game.
"They're going to coach," UAB head men's basketball coach Mike Anderson proclaimed. "This is going to be a fun night for them, for our guys, our coaches and our fans. These guys are always giving advice like they know how to coach, so we'll see if they really can.
"It's all in good fun," Anderson added.
The Green team will be coached by Melick and will feature twins Donell and Ronell Taylor, postmen Ernest Little and Brandon Tobias, junior college transfer Marvett McDonald, freshman guard Paul Delaney and Arkansas transfer Wen Mukubu, who will sit out the 2004-05 season, but is eligible to play in the intra-squad scrimmage. Raita's Gold team will consist of point guard Carldell "Squeaky" Johnson, guards Richard Jones, Derrick Broom and Reed Davis, postmen Marques Lewis and Demario Eddins, and freshman forward Frank Holmes. Micheal Anderson Jr., will play for the Green team in the first half, then the Gold in the second, to even out the numbers.
While Raita and Melick were reluctant to place friendly wagers on the outcome, it is certain to be a topic of discussion on Sunday night's "The Zone" on ABC 33/40. The program, hosted by Raita, features Melick and Birmingham News writer Doug Segrest in a discussion of the week's sports news. It airs at 10:35 p.m. (CT) after the Sunday night news.
