BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The 2003 season is shaping up to be a very competitive one for the UAB women's soccer team, according to the schedule announced today by Blazer head coach Paul Harbin. The Blazers will play five in-state schools, in addition to a demanding Conference USA schedule. UAB will also host Georgia Southern, South Alabama and Samford the 2003 UAB Nike Classic.
Non-conference home contests are against Auburn, Alabama, South Alabama, Georgia Southern and Birmingham Southern. UAB will also travel to Clemson, S.C., for the Clemson Tournament in September. The 10-game Conference USA slate includes traditionally-tough games versus Charlotte, Cincinnati and Houston.
"Once again, we are excited about playing a tremendously competitive schedule," said Harbin. "Five of the teams we'll face this season (Tennessee, Clemson, Charlotte, Cincinnati and Auburn) were ranked in the top 20 during the 2002 season. In addition, six teams competed in the NCAA Tournament (Cincinnati, Furman, Charlotte, Auburn, Clemson and Tennessee). There are a lot of tough teams early in the season and I believe it will help our team grow and develop before getting into a difficult Conference USA schedule."
UAB will play two exhibition games, at Tennessee on August 22 and Jacksonville State on August 24, before beginning the season by hosting Auburn and Alabama. The Blazers and Tigers will battle it out on Friday, August 29, at 7 p.m. at West Campus Field. On Sunday, August 31, the Crimson Tide come to Birmingham, kickoff is at 2 p.m.
The Blazers then travel to the Clemson Tournament in Clemson, S.C. UAB will face Furman on Friday, September 5 at 5 p.m. before facing host Clemson on Sunday, February 7 at 3:30 p.m.
On Friday, September 12 and Sunday, September 14, the Blazers host the 2003 UAB Nike Classic. On September 12, Samford and Georgia Southern face each other at 5 p.m. before UAB hosts South Alabama at 7 p.m. On September 14, Samford and South Alabama will play each other at noon, while the Blazers battle Georgia Southern at 2 p.m.
On Friday, September 19, UAB will be in Charlotte for the beginning of C-USA play. In addition to Charlotte, the Blazers will travel to face conference foes Louisville (Sept. 21), Southern Miss (Oct. 10), Tulane (Oct. 12) and South Florida (Oct. 31). UAB hosts Conference USA opponents Cincinnati (Sept. 26), DePaul (Sept. 28), Houston (Oct. 17), TCU (Oct. 24) and Memphis (Oct. 26).
UAB will also host intra-city rival Birmingham Southern on Sunday, October 19, at 2 p.m.
The Blazers' new season will begin on Friday, August 29, when they host Auburn.
